Oh No! The Ocean Shrank!
"Oh No! The Ocean Shrank!" is by far the best quote by a toddler I have ever heard to describe what happens during low tide.
Every day in Puerto Peñasco, the tide rises and falls. It is a breathtaking view of the battle between the land and the sea. From what I understand, the tide change happens because of the gravitational forces between the sun, the moon and the rotation of the Earth. The gravitational pull of the moon is stronger than that of the sun, resulting in a greater effect on the ocean's tides. When the moon is either in its first quarter or its last quarter position, the gravitational influences of the moon and sun are in opposing directions and the ocean's tides pull back. When the moon is either in its full or new phases, the gravitational pulls of the moon and sun are in the same direction and create larger tidal fluctuations and come all the way of the the beaches.
During the low tides, you can walk out and find many cool sea creatures like Octopus, Sea Urchins, Starfish and Shells that have been caught in the pools of water and in the lava rocks. Please be careful what you touch. Also, if it's still alive, please allow it to stay in it's home and go back to the sea when the tide comes back up. Although it's great to explore right outside of the Marina Pinacate, you can check out other places like Cholla Bay and Laguna Shores where they are known to have the most severe tide fluctuations.
